La Tomatina is best known for the boozy tomato brawl that takes place on the last Wednesday of every August, but the food fight is actually just one part of a weeklong celebration. If you want to watch sopping drunk revelers scratch and claw their way up a greased pole in pursuit of a ham, you'll need to be on the scene bright and early. Once the ham is heroically toppled from the palo jabón, the tomato tossing begins and continues for about an hour. You can bus in from nearby Valencia, but your best bet is to do it up in Buñol the night before and power through straight into the festival the next day.
