Winner: Caletti Cycles
Santa Cruz, California's John Caletti has been making some of the country's best steel and titanium bikes for over a decade, but at this year's NAHBS he really wanted to make a splash. So he asked local artist Jeremiah Kille to take one of his frames and turn it into something truly special. Caletti started by applying a white base coat to a titanium frameset, and then sent the frameset (and a matching helmet and pair of shoes) to Kille. He hand-painted the bike with an oceanic theme that includes starfish, an octopus, and other sea-dwelling creatures. A clear-coat was then applied to preserve's Kille's art. The result is a prize-winning masterpiece that looks almost too good to ride.
