Mercedes C-Class Plug-In
Call it the trickle-down effect. Mercedes' best-selling C-Class now gets the same plug-in technology that debuted last year in the flagship S-Class. Arriving in September as part of an ambitious plan to roll out 10 plug-in models by 2017, the C-Class offers 19 miles on battery power alone while the electric motor can be coupled with the combustion engine when more immediate pick-up speeds are required. Coupled to the electric motor is a 211-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The lithium-ion battery pack, meanwhile, is located above the rear axle to better handling and can be pre-heated or cooled down to extend range. Next up are plug-in versions of the M-Class SUV (rebadged as the GLE) and the E-Class sedan.
