Port of Mumbai to Thane, India
Though the tangled stretch of new and ancient roads, winding side streets, and passageways connecting Mumbai's port and Thane is a mere 15 miles, Pedraita says his attempt to cruise through it without opting for the highway ended up taking an astonishing 11 hours. "This is the craziest place in the world," he says. "There are horses and cows wandering next to Mercedes, the police next to a donkey pulling the coroner's cart. A helicopter landed right on the street while everyone waited," he recalls. "It's like seeing the entire world in one spot." Should you choose to drop in to sample the mass of humanity and chaos yourself, Pedraita warns against trying to pull off and stop, unless you're really into meeting people. "It took about three seconds and you get swarmed by beggars, all of them wanting to touch and smell you."
