Baseball: Bull Durham (1988)
There's no hero's moment in Bull Durham. No walk-off home run that shatters the lights and wins the big game. Instead, this classic stands out for being all the things that most cookie cutter sports movies are not: It worships at the Church of Baseball, but understands that sometimes being boring is the point. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains,” and sometimes hard work doesn't beat pure talent. Kevin Kostner was at his peak as Crash Davis, a minor-leaguer catcher who reigns in a phenom fireballer (Tim Robbins), only to be tossed aside when the kid finally makes it to the big leagues. But hey, at least Crash gets the girl.
