Frequency: Weekly during its season
Host: Sarah Koenig
Podcasting has been around for a decade, but Serial was the show that got most people hooked on the format. Through a 12-episode first season, This American Life contributor Sarah Koenig examined the 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee by her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, asking questions of friends, witnesses, accusers, family members, lawyers, and Syed himself, driving the same routes to connect the prosecutors' time line, examining phone records, visiting the Best Buy parking lot where Syed and his accomplice, Jay, met after the alleged murder, and the park where they buried her body, all to answer the question of whether this man who has maintained his innocence for nearly 20 years really did it. And if he didn't, how the American justice system is failing. It's a gripping true story that will leaving you questioning your own biases each episode.
Best Episode: Start with the first episode, "The Alibi," but the best episode is "Route Talk," when Koenig and her producer try to replicate the boys' day. Hopefully a new season is on the way soon.
