There were plenty of great production-car debuts at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, but, as is often the case, the real stars were the concepts.
Featuring styling and technology that's not intended for near-term production, concept cars are the manufacturers' way of providing a little glimpse into the automotive future. Here are six versions of the future worth getting excited about.
Volkswagen Beetle Dune
Here's another concept that you might actually be able to drive. Volkswagen claims that if its Beetle Dune concept receives a positive enough response, the company will put it into production.
The car itself isn't that big a departure from the existing Beetle, it's just beefed up with bigger wheels, flared fenders, a wider stance, and a raised rear suspension.
If it does make it to production, though, you'd want to be careful taking the Dune to actual dunes – it's still front-wheel drive.
