Coconut Lemon Saffron Sorbet
When we emailed the Portland-based Fifty Licks about their ice cream, owner Chad Draizin responded right away to say that he was getting married in two days — but that he'd be back to send me some ice cream by the week's end. Draizin's dedication to his ice cream shines in the final product, which involves a selection of unbelievably tasty handmade ice creams. If you have time, we whole-heartedly recommend the current seasonal flavor, Oregon Strawberry, which so far excels every strawberry ice cream we've ever tasted that it might be impossible to go back to other versions after this. Don't worry if you miss Oregon Strawberry, however, since everything at Fifty Licks is just so good. Their Coconut Lemon Saffron Sorbet is one of the best examples of the herbed fruit flavor trend. It's extremely creamy for a sorbet, and while the addition of coconut is not unusual when it comes to frozen desserts, its inclusion here is inspired. While the sweetness of the coconut is partly cut by the lemon, it's also made more complex by the saffron. But don't overthink it. Just be careful you don't end up eating it all day.
