Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace
Taking its name from Walt Whitman's famous poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," Ample Hills gives off throwback small-town Brooklyn vibes and is located in—where else—Brooklyn. Among its signature offerings are twists on old school flavors such as Salted Crack Caramel, Peppermint Pattie, and Sweet As Honey (which uses a sweet cream base and includes homemade honeycomb candy). Ample Hills also boasts fairly eccentric combinations, such as The Munchies, described as a "pretzel-infused ice cream with clusters of Ritz crackers, potato chips, pretzels and mini M&Ms." Our favorite sampling from this Brooklyn joint, however, was more of a classic reboot: the nostalgically named Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace, which features Nonna's homemade oatmeal lace cookies in brown sugar cinnamon ice cream. Unlike zanier flavors that grow overwhelming when paired with other treats, Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace is good both by itself and accompanied with a baked good (so long as the carbs take the back seat). The true star is the brown sugar cinnamon ice cream, which has us wondering why aren't more ice creams brown-sugar based.
