Pap Smears Always Test for STDs
This is a very specific but very important point. Barr says that many people misunderstand the purpose of a woman's yearly Pap smear. This test checks for human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer. It is not a test for all STDs. So just because a pap smear comes back clean, doesn't mean that woman is STD-free. If you want to get screened for STDs — which the CDC recommends you do yearly — you have to ask specifically for those screenings.
