The advantages of spring skiing often outweigh the disadvantage of damp corduroy. The arrival of the sun means you can ski in your shirtsleeves and the arrival of festival season means you can ski in your shirtsleeves to a slopeside party. If the winter is about getting radical, spring is about having a good time in ski towns full of lift operators looking to let off some steam. Here's where you should head this season if you want a great last run.
Mt. Bachelor, Oregon
On April 20th, Oregon's Mt. Bachelor hosts the Gerry Lopez Big Wave Challenge and Luau, a one-of-a-kind snowboard-only event hosted by legendary surfer Gerry Lopez, who calls Bachelor his home mountain. Snow park architects sculpt a series of big banked corners, quarter pipes, and wave-shaped spines that allow contestants to surf the course, being judged on speed, control, power, and flow. It's a flash frozen big wave competition followed by a traditional Luau with Hawaiian music and there's even a category for pro-surfers to compete against each other. For boarders, it underlines a month of pleasant corduroy and micro-brew soaked parties.
