Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a staple of elementary school lunches, sure, but as a grown up we've all had the guilty pleasure of eating a jar or two just with the spoon. A few years ago, we'd be chomping down on some Jif or Peter Pan, but now, with the glut of options in the marketplace — not to mention the overwhelming popularity of generalized nut butters — we can eat a different type of peanut butter for every month of the year. And that's being conservative.
The problem with taste testing peanut butter is that it's a versatile food, enjoyable by the spoon, on celery, with jam, or, what's quickly becoming a favorite, with dill pickles. We tried to break down some of the biggest and best (but not so big) brands below, along with the best way to eat each of them. This is by no means comprehensive, but in an exceedingly crowded market, it should at least be helpful.
