George Washington Memorial Parkway
Where It Goes: This short byway runs along the south bank of the Potomac River and extends from Mount Vernon, Virginia, to Langley, Virginia, passing briefly through Washington, D.C.
Length: 25 miles
Driving Time: Less than an hour
Where to Stop: D.C., of course, offers unlimited monuments and museums to explore, but from the perspective of the GW Parkway, focus on Georgetown University, which looms impressively over the Potomac, and is surrounded by a neighborhood of cobblestone streets, narrow roads, and lush parks. Tour Dumbarton Oaks, a historic estate with 27 acres of streams, gardens, and sculptures.
