U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell can pretty much get a tee time wherever he wants, but many of his favorite spots are open to the public. The PGA star picks the top courses anyone can play – no club I.D. required.
It's not a shock that McDowell likes playing at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head. He won the 2013 RBC Heritage tournament despite ferociously windy conditions.
The course was designed by Pete Dye with an assist from Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1969 and McDowell likes the layout because each hole requires planning. "You've got to really place the ball on the correct side of the fairway," he says. "It's not just about being on the fairway. You have to be at a certain distance and you have to be on a certain side to have a line to the green."
McDowell, who attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is no stranger to southern flavor. The Hilton Head stop is one of his favorites "for its hospitality, great BBQ, and good people." [Peak season rounds start at $272]
