2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE
Carmakers love to change names. The Mercedes ML, one of the first crossovers to debut back in 1997, is now called the GLE. But this change in label is more than a badge job. The GLE can now be had as a plug-in hybrid, the GLE550e 4MATIC, which has a combined electric/gas output of 436hp and can run solely on electric propulsion for 18 miles, and as a pure EV up to 81mph. All of this is great for commuters, but for range on road trips, we'd opt from the 369 lb-ft of torque from the GLE300d diesel instead. And, naturally, there's also an AMG edition of the spacious five-passenger GLE: the 577hp twin-turbo V-8 AMG GLE63 4MATIC with a 0-60 of roughly 4.5 seconds (yes, you can slay that guy in the Mustang on your way home from work). The price is TBD, but pricing on the ML ranged between $48,000 and $98,000.
