America is a land blessed with scenic roads. They unravel down coasts and pull taut across the plains. They wind up mountains and ensnare glacial lakes. And, everywhere you go, they are punctuated by pullouts, those gravel or asphalt outgrowths where motorists can pull over to stretch their legs and, perhaps, take in the view. Scenery might not be the only reason to pull over, but it is the best and these are the best spots to take it all in. Just be sure your camera is in the car.
California Route 1
California's coastal routes may offer the best drive-through scenery in America. The stretch of Route 1 that rolls along Big Sur's craggy coast above the Pacific Ocean is so relentlessly scenic that it can't be captured from a single view. Still, the pullout just south of the bridge over Big Creek lets motorists look up the massive coast. When the fog rolls in, it only increases the drama of the coastline.
