For Dallas Buyer's Club, Matthew McConaughey began a four-month diet at 185 pounds; he'd originally planned to lose only 40, but he didn't think he looked sick enough until he dropped 10 more. (He's said he limited himself to about 1,800 calories per day and "chewed a lot of ice.") "I ran into somebody and they didn't just ask if I was all right, they said, 'My God, we need to get you some help,' " he's said. "And I thought, 'There we go. That's the perfect spot.' "

The Bottom Line:
McConaughey said he was a "hermit" during his weight loss period, and that's probably a good thing. "If at the height of his weight loss he'd been exposed to the flu, he would have been very susceptible to becoming infected or having a worse reaction to an infection because his immune system may have been compromised," says Kushner. As it is, his loss of strength was undeniable: "I would do five push-ups and be sore," the actor reportedly told the UK-based magazine Radio Times, adding, "I would run 30 feet and my legs would lock up."
