Islay: Laphroaig 10
If you aim to drink like a grizzled old fisherman, look no further than the drams of Islay. The small landmass off the southwest coast of the Scottish mainland has been called Whisky Island for its eight active distilleries. They produce the most pungent liquid found in Scotland, characterized by a smoky peat and salinity unmatched by any other region. Laphroaig 10 is particularly medicinal, with notes of iodine, but has an elegant touch of salty-sweetness that other rougher-around-the-edges Islay whiskies lack.
