An oscillating tool can cut, sand, and scrape nearly every surface of a house, making small maintenance tasks simple. We rated the latest by completing tasks such as outlet-fitting, grout-grinding, and doorjamb-cutting, and put 80-grit triangular sanding sheets to work on some badly mauled scrap boards. We also used the saw blades to make crosscuts into pine. Here are the ones we liked best.
Rockwell Sonicrafter X2
Oscillating tools have always had proprietary accessories. The Sonicrafter is the first to take a utilitarian approach, able to securely screw down 16 brands' accessories with no adapter needed – a great touch. Sold with six accessories and three sanding sheets, the 3.3-pound tool performed admirably, sanding and cutting at 20,000 OPM. Its most notable trait, however, was a finicky on-off switch that gave us headaches. [$150; rockwelltools.com]
