1959: Tipo 61 Birdcage
While its style denoted an emphasis on aerodynamics, this two-seater was built primarily for endurance races. Note the exaggerated large wheel arches and unique windscreen; both helped distinguish this open-top car both on, and off, the track. As for its Birdcage name, that references a special chassis comprised of 200+ pieces, which was applied to future Maseratis—although none to level of expression as with the Tipo 61. To wit, the Tipo 61 Birdcage won the Nurburgring 1000-kilometer endurance. Twice.
