The first thing we noticed about this dark blonde–colored tripel ale from Dowington, PA-based Victory Brewing Company was the smell. Spices waft off the surface of this beer as they would through the swinging kitchen door of an Indian restaurant – you're suddenly under assault from an aromatic blend of fruits, herbs, and coriander seeds. And while that smell makes for a pleasant nose, it's less palatable in liquid form. Victory should be applauded for the ambition of its 9.5% ABV Golden Monkey, but it's overspiced and is only a must-buy for connoisseurs of innovative takes on Belgian-style ales.
