Best for: Outdoorsmen and discipline-minded types with no interest in outbursts from an unpredictable or over-spirited animal.

This rare breed is descended from one dog named Chinook, a husky mix who joined explorer Richard Byrd on a polar expedition in 1928. Calm and eager to please, Chinooks are easy to train and love the outdoors. A friendly, nonaggressive nature makes them good with kids but bad with burglars.
