Road trips offer the promise of freedom, adventure – and bad food. Gas station and rest stop foods are typically loaded with sodium, added sugars, hydrogenated fats, and chemicals with unpronounceable names. But with a little planning and sleuthing through the aisles of the grocery store, specialty store and, yes, even the gas station, you can find a few snacks that are road-worthy. While we're not offering up kale salads and freshly grilled salmon – those are a bit messy for the back seat – here's a healthy shortlist of over-the-counter snacks.
Blue Diamond Whole Natural Almonds (1.5-oz pack)
This is going to be the best nut find at the gas station. What sets it apart is the serving size – 1.5 oz means it's only 50 percent bigger than an actual serving of almonds, making it harder to overindulge. The single-serving sleeves cap calories at 250, while giving you 5 g of fiber and 9 g of protein.
Sugar content: 2 g
Fat: All from almonds
Other: No extra ingredients, just almonds. And the sodium content? Zilch. Other dry roasted whole nuts are also a great choice.
Where to get it: Gas station, grocery store.
