1903 Mercedes Simplex 60HP
The 2015 Best in Show prize winner, this 112-year-old, 9.2-liter 60-hp model was part of a lineage of Mercedes vehicles that set a new benchmark in car design. Capable of 80 mph — astonishing performance for the time — its alloy engine featured twin camshafts, a four-speed gearbox, and a chassis with low center of gravity. A 60-hp model went on to win The Gordon Bennett Cup — then the most important international race — sealing Mercedes's fate with international recognition. Of the 60-hp models, only four are currently known to exist.
