Birth of a Nation
Written, directed by, and starring Nate Parker, Birth of a Nation, reclaims its name from the infamous D.W. Griffith film that presented the KKK as a force for good from 1915. In Parker's directorial debut, he tells the true story of Nat Turner and his 1831 slave rebellion. Like 12 Years a Slave, the film portrays the brutal horrors of slavery, in a moment where Hollywood and the nation are reexamining the subject of racism. Selling at the Sundance Film Festival for a whopping $17.5 million, the title is already getting Oscar buzz.
