With half a million apps in the iTunes store, it's little surprise that the past few years have seen an explosion in wine apps. Most of these are fairly rudimentary programs with vintage charts, wine ratings, and food pairings – the kind of stuff better served up in a wine magazine or a guidebook. To be a wine geek, you need decent stemware and the ability to track down unforgettable bottles. For the latter, there's Wine Search – basically an easy-to-use search database that taps into almost 5 million wines from 31,000 merchants via Wine-searcher.com. The one drawback: It doesn't let you search by state. It's a minor flaw in an otherwise incredibly handy tool. [$2; iPhone, iPad]
