Traveling is the hardest fun thing you'll ever do, but veteran wanderers know that time on the road can be more enjoyable and less stressful if you avoid falling into predictable traps. These mistakes, which can make trips taxing both literally and figuratively, are easy to avoid – you just have to have a strategy.
Going straight from point A to point B
Some of the best travel experiences – and stories – come from chance encounters. Keep a map in your pocket just in case, but you may find more adventure by intentionally choosing random routes between major landmarks.
This is easier to do in cities that have natural boundaries; you won't get too lost wandering around Venice or Manhattan. On the way, you will encounter interesting shops, exotic architecture, charming patisseries, and more of the local culture on side streets than you would ever see if you stuck to major roads or tourist strips.
