Sanson, Terrace Coya, Sakuho, Japan
This quiet gem located in the Japanese highlands is a little over 100 miles from Tokyo. But you wouldn't know it: This one room was hand-built by the owners and is hidden on a mountainside surrounded by towering trees and nature. It is solar powered, heated by a wood-burning stove, has a composting toilet and a propane stove for cooking, but the stereo system brings a taste of civilization to these simple accommodations. With several hiking trails nearby and Mt. Morai looming nearby, you will have opportunities to go adventuring. But the cottage's real highlight is the ability to unplug and unwind while soaking up the surrounding countryside from your front deck or from one of the several hammocks spread about the property.
Getting there: Fly into Tokyo and either catch the train to Sakuho or rent a car to drive the three-hours into the mountains to town. Once there the owner will meet you to take you to the local organic grocery and to the cottage.
