Ancient Rome: Sexual Imagery for Protection
Credit: Wikipedia

In ancient Rome "pornography" literally meant to write about prostitutes. This doesn't mean that there wasn't sexually explicit material around. Actually, the reality was quite the opposite. There were giant phalluses all over the place. Some had wings and some were attached to hybrid animals. They were placed on street corners, outside houses, and at crossroads. It was believed these objects warded off demons because the forms were so absurd, the humor would combat the evil spirits.
