Before db Bistro Moderne's Alexander LaPratt set us straight, the only thing we were looking for in a wineglass was something clean. He was, of course, appalled. "The right wineglass can change your experience," he explained, waxing poetic on how shape controls aroma, how the wine hits the lips, and the perfect temperature for different types of vino. LaPratt, who was named Best Sommelier in America by the American Sommelier Association last year (at the age of 30), believes fervently that any serious wine drinker needs at least five kinds of glasses. You wouldn't, after all, hang a Renoir in a plastic frame.
Here is the glassware that will best complement your favorite vintage.
Skip those noisy aereator gizmos and use a simple decanter to expose your wine to air and bring out all the complexities of flavor. Try the Spiegelau hybrid decanter. [$85; riedelusa.com]
