This massive Moorish castle was built in 1148, just before the first king of Portugal stormed it and assumed the freshly-made throne. The castle was subsequently remodeled and expanded, largely with government money. Today it is a pousada, the Iberian term for castle hotel. The town of Obidos sits within the city walls.
