Energy Independence in 5 Easy Steps

Under the Pickens Plan, wind energy will replace natural gas as a source for our electricity needs — watt for watt. The freed-up natural gas can then be used for fueling cars and trucks, significantly reducing our reliance on oil in that sector. It’s this simple swap, Pickens says, that is key to eventually dropping imported oil for good.

1. Spend $58 million on a national media campaign to convince America that wind energy is the answer to our crippling dependence on foreign oil.

2. Erect $1 trillion worth of wind turbines throughout the Great Plains, a.k.a. the “wind belt,” and connect them to the country’s power grid at a further cost of $200 billion.

3. With wind now producing 22 percent of our electricity needs, all of our natural gas resources can
be used for transportation fuel. (Natural gas and biofuels are currently the only domestic energy sources used for transportation, according to Pickens.)

4. Using that natural gas, which is the second largest natural resource in the U.S., for transportation fuel eventually replaces more than a third of the U.S.’s annual $700 billion thirst for foreign oil in just 10 years.

5. Pray that the wind blows.
