Based in Chicago, with additional locations in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco, Intelligentsia has been going 21 years strong. Started in 1995 by Doug Zell and Emily Mange (a time when freshly roasted beans were hard to come by), the brand continues to bring freshly roasted beans to the public through its cafes and Roasting Works coffee bars and training labs throughout the country.
Coffee offerings include single origin, sourced from family-owned farms and smallholder co-ops and estates; blends; decaf (decaffeinated through a chemical-free, mountain water process); and Intelligentsia In Season, roasted for brewing at peak sweetness. Their Black Cat Project Espresso turns single origin and seasonal coffees into bold espressos in all its forms.
Fun fact: Intelligentsia’s Flecha Roja blend was used in the 2016 Goose Island Bourbon County Proprietor’s Stout.
