Fernetic Beer

This month, Chicago’s Forbidden Root brewery will release a beer made in collaboration with the extremely floral and pungent Italian digestif Fernet Branca. The beer was brewed with some of the botanicals found in the amaro, including rhubarb root, saffron, and wormwood, creating a unique, spicy, and slightly bitter beer. This is the first of this type of experiment for both Forbidden Root and Fernet Branca, combining the modern sensibilities of this three-year-old self-described “botanical brewery” with the tradition of an almost 200-year-old Italian spirit.
