The Patterson House, a speakeasy-style bar in Nashville, has been providing an ever-changing menu of classic and contemporary cocktails since 2009. Stealthily located in an unassuming space in midtown, the bar traffics in house-made syrups and bitters and re-created Prohibition-era tipples. The Patterson House relies on a staff of detail-oriented barkeepers to pour spirits precisely for high-profile customers like Connie Britton and Jack White. One of the new house favorites is Bartender Doug Monroe's Golden Suit, which combines Belle Meade bourbon, lemon juice, apricot liqueur, Falernum, simple syrup, old-fashioned bitters, and a hint of nutmeg.

"I wanted to incorporate flavors that could transition into fall without completely leaving the warm weather behind," says Monroe. "The Falernum's bold spices are reminiscent of cold weather spice, while also complementing the apricot and the dark rye notes of the whiskey. It's refreshing enough for warmer fall days, but warm enough for those cooler October evenings."

The name comes from the story of John Philip Nelson, the great-grandfather of the owners of Nashville's Green Brier Distillery. When Nelson decided to relocate his family from Germany to America to start a better life, he exchanged all of the family's earthly possessions for gold and created a special suit to hold his riches during the journey. The family set sail in 1850, but a monstrous storm sent John overboard and he and the "golden suit" disappeared into the depths. With heavy hearts, the rest of the family arrived in America with one less member, way less money, and more determination then ever.

The Golden Suit

Ingredients
• 2 oz Belle Meade bourbon
• 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 oz apricot liqueur (Marie Brizzard)
• 1/4+ oz Falernum (Velvet or homemade)
• 1/4- oz simple syrup
• 1 dash Fees old-fashioned bitters

Preparation
Pour all the liquid ingredients into a shaker. Add ice and shake until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Grate whole nutmeg over the top of the cocktail and serve.
