Valar Morghulis: Drinking to Arya Stark with Ommegang's New Game of Thrones Beer

The fifth season of the Game of Thrones is some seven months away, but at least we can still drink to our favorite HBO series with Ommegang Brewery's latest Game of Thrones-themed beer, a Belgian dubbel called Valar Morghulis, that hits shelves on October 1. Brewed in collaboration with HBO, the name and style were picked by fans over three other options: Seven Kingdoms, a tripel style, and two quadruples called Khal and Hand of the King. The winner, unsurprisingly, eludes to the phrase spoken by fan favorite Arya Stark, that translates to "all men must die." A picture of Arya's two-headed coin — splattered in blood — appears on the label.

Fpr Valar Morghulis, the brewery created an 8-percent dubbel style beer that is similar to its long-running Abbey Ale but with slightly less alcohol and a more straightforward (drinkable) recipe that did without the five spices that are prominent in the Abbey.

Like so many great Belgian ales, this beer offers bold flavors — caramel and toffee come to mind — without a heavy body . Valar Morghulis is rich enough to make for a satisfying sipper, but won't fill you up after a couple glasses.  This is the fourth in Ommegang's Game of Thrones series, which include Take the Black Stout, the Iron Throne Blond Ale, and the Fire and Blood Red Ale. While Valar Morghulis will come to bar taps in October, the brewery warns that previous Games of Throne beers sold out quickly.
