Cuisinart Smart Stick Hand Blender
In accordance with its skimpy price tag, this plastic-shelled blender touts only a small motor and single speed — just enough to make smooth soups and sauces. Still, Richard considered it a bargain. “It’s slower than the rest,” he said, “but actually does the job well.” Richard’s Rating: 8/10 [$30; cuisinart.com]

The problem with all of these is the metal wands – ouch for non-stick pans!
I have a vintage Moulinex 728 hand blender (made in France, not China), 150w, and the wand is heatproof plastic which is teflon safe and which unscrews to wash/go in the dishwasher.
I remember it being a ‘Which?’ Magazine (British version of ‘Consumer Reports’) Best Buy at the time at only £14, which was a lot of money then! Yet relatively inexpensive compared to the other brands.
You can commonly pick them up on eBay, etc. for $8-10 or so.
