Alexa, What Deals Do You Have for Prime Day?

Recent years have seen a ridiculous uptick in the number of consumer-focused “holidays.” Between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Record Store Day, and Cyber Monday, consumers these days are constantly are bombarded with sales. And of course social media is constantly reminding us of National [enter random consumable here] Day.

Online retailer Amazon has a holiday, too: Prime Day, in which deals are rolled out constantly at the retailer’s website over the course of the 30-hour event starting at 6PM on July 10. The special offers are exclusively targeted to Amazon Prime subscribers, and also to entice casual Amazon users to sign up for Prime.

These days you don’t hear from Amazon without hearing about the Echo, their popular voice-activated smart home device that can order food, play music, and search the web via its alter-ego, Alexa. As such, Amazon is offering exclusive deals to those who place orders on Prime Day using only their voice — and they’ll get a head-start, two hours before Prime Day opens for everyone else. Prime deals will be available via Echo beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 10 by asking, “Alexa, what are your deals?”

Voice users will also receive a discounted Prime membership of $79.95 per year — a $20 discount — if they sign up via their Echo or Fire TV devices. On top of all that, Amazon is also offering a $10 coupon for Prime members who make their first voice order before 11:59 p.m. on June 9.

Why the Echo-based incentives? It turns out more than half of the Echo’s 10 million (and counting) users don’t order products or services with Alexa. Bloomberg reported recently that a survey of shoppers by the bargain-hunters site DealNews.com proved that shopping through the devices simply hasn’t taken off; more than 50 percent of respondents claimed the voice technology just wasn’t any easier than ordering via their fingers. Some cited trust or security issues, but most apparently just liked the ability to give their Shopping Cart the once-over before clicking the yellow “Place Your Order” button.

But to all Echo owners, we say this: Take the day to try it and save upwards of $30. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1. Go to your Amazon Alexa app and go to Settings and choose “Voice Purchasing” and turn it on.

Step 2. Then, sign into your Amazon account and make sure your default shipping address and credit card are correct (you won’t be able to verify them).

Step 3. On Sunday before midnight, ask “Alexa, what are your deals?” You will be prompted with a list of exclusive deals on products ordered through Echo and other Alexa-activated devices.

Step 4. Tell Alex to order what you want. Do it before midnight on the 9th to get your $10 discount.
