Our Favorite Portable Hotspot for International Travel

When you travel across international borders, staying connected is usually one of the top priorities and biggest headaches. Whether you collect your passport stamps for business or leisure travel, it can be a challenge finding secure, reliable, and affordable internet access.

Enter the Keepgo Global Lifetime Mobile WiFi Hotspot ($129 at Amazon). The portable, battery-operated hotspot conveniently connects up to ten devices at a time, including cell phones, tablets, and laptops. Instead of paying for pricey international data plans or roaming charges, the Keepgo comes preloaded with a full gigabyte of data, and allows you to refill your data as needed while you travel, or you can set up an auto-refill plan.

The Keepgo is compact and weighs just 2.7 ounces, allowing it to effortlessly slip into a pocket, backpack, or briefcase. With the press of button, you’re quickly connected (usually within seconds) to unthrottled 4G LTE data. Each charge powers the hotspot for up to six hours of continuous use and approximately 300 hours of standby time. The charger also comes with an adapter, making it suitable to use with electrical outlets in the United States and anywhere that uses the Europlug (known as the “Type C” plug and found in numerous countries beyond Europe).

One of Keepgo’s unique features is the sheer global coverage it provides. It operates by connecting to local cellular networks in more than 70 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa. The most commonly traveled destinations, such as Canada, France, and Thailand, are on the list, as well as more remote locales like Liechtenstein, Macau, and the Canary Islands.

It’s not ideal for every international globetrotter, though, as there are many countries where it isn’t currently compatible. Additionally, connection speed and efficiency depends on the local wireless providers in any given location, so the Keepgo will work better in certain areas over others. It also isn’t a particularly affordable gadget if you plan on steaming videos, or using large quantities of data for long periods of time. All things considered, we definitely recommend checking it out.

The 4G LTE plans start at 500MG of data for $19 and increase incrementally: 1GB for $35, 3GB for $85, 5GB for $119, and 10GB for $219. You can buy data plans through PayPal or with a credit card online or via the Keepgo app. Once purchased, you have one calendar year to use the data before the plan expires.
