Toyota FT-4X Concept
The FT-4X (Future Toyota Four-Wheel Drive) took its initial bow to the tune of a baritone-sax “Thrift Shop” riff while a tumbling crew of street artists made spraypainting gestures. Introducing the vehicle, CALTY Design Research President Kevin Hunter said it was aimed at “outdoorsy Bay Area millennials” that are “less hard core, more casual core.” Sounds pretty awful, right? Actually, the FT-4X looks great. The small SUV concept comes packing a bunch of cool ideas we hope make it to production, from a reinforced, completely flat roof with integrated power outlets (so you could, say, pitch a tent on top and power your gadgets) to a cargo bay that opens both vertically and horizontally, to removable vertical picture windows, to a GoPro built into a rearview mirror. Even better: Most controls are physically rotatable knobs, for more “mechanical satisfaction.” Toyota says that the concept would be powered by a fuel-efficient four-cylinder.
