The Pinnacle of Rugged Comfort

On trails from Texas to Thailand, we've put thousands of miles on Danner's classic Mountain Lights — but now we have a new favorite in the Portland, Oregon bootmaker's retinue: the Mountain 600. Although it incorporates the former's timeless looks and bulletproof build, the boot feels like a basketball sneaker on the foot, thanks to an extensive weight-loss regimen. The ultraflexy rubber and EVA midsole provides plenty of rebound on hard ground, while a tenacious Vibram outsole lends tack on tough sections of switchback. And of course it's waterproof. Too soon to call it a new classic? We don't think so. [$180; backcountry.com]
