Opinel No. 9 DIY Knife
This multi-tool ($30 at Backcountry) doesn’t turn you into Daniel Boone, but it does ready you for both urban and wilderness tasks. The 3 1/4-inch stainless steel blade holds an edge, and modular flat and Phillips head drivers clip into the handle for storage then seat into a magnetized holder on the knife’s butt. So when your snowboard binding comes loose or you need to tighten the TP holder in your rental digs, you’re ready. The plastic handle doesn’t conduct heat or cold, which is handy for winter travel. And the blade is as good for slicing cheese as cleaning a fish.
