Spinn Coffee

Roderick de Rode's mission was to make a smart coffee machine for the artisanal crowd. To that end, his Spinn brewer passes whole beans from a storage hopper through a grinder and into a centrifuge that spins like a washing machine filled with hot water. The adjustable speed of the centrifuge makes for a precision brew: A faster spin builds the pressure necessary for espresso; a slower one delivers familiar joe. Spinn users can also have beans shipped automatically when the hopper's sensor indicates they're running low. Roasters themselves can adjust water temperature and spin speed — through the cloud — so that the coffee comes out the way they intend it to. In other words, mission accomplished. [$299; spinn.com]
