The Need for Speed

The folks over at Aston Martin generally tend toward beautiful restraint. But with the Valkyrie, the Brits go big, moderation be damned. And we love it. The result of a partnership with Red Bull Racing — the Formula One team — the Valkyrie is a four-wheel spacecraft in a classification we haven't settled on yet. (Is it a hypercar? A megacar? An ultracar, even?) Whatever moniker each of the 150 copies of this $3.2 million machine ends up with, the Valkyrie will be the purest expression of speed we've ever seen in a street-legal car design. "It leaves nothing in reserve," says Aston chief creative officer Marek Reichman. Two cavernous channels stretch front to back, flanking the cockpit and the naturally aspirated V12 engine's bay, essentially gluing the machine to the ground — even at 4.5 G-force and a top speed of 250 miles per hour. Its seats, fitted into the car's carbon tub, will be built to suit the buyer using a 3-D laser scan. Better start that diet. [astonmartin.com]
