Ghost SL AMR X9 LC 29

Germany’s Ghost Bikes was founded in 1993 by two young bike lovers from northern Bavaria, and the brand was brought to the USA by REI in 2015. Dependable, durable, and sensibly spec’d, it has quickly developed a reputation for providing a good amount of bang for your buck (especially with the 10 percent dividend REI offers its members). For 2017, the highlight is the new SL AMR X9 LC, a carbon-fiber all-mountain bike with 29-inch wheels and 140mm of rear travel. Ghost works closely with suspension manufacturer Cane Creek, and the SL AMR X9 LC features an exclusive shock found only on Ghost bikes: the Cane Creek Double Barrel Coil Inline CS. The shock features four-way adjustability, twin-tube damping for better small-bump sensitivity, and an on-the-fly Climb Switch for better efficiency when the trail heads uphill. And just in case you’re wondering: The SL AMR X8 LC is the same bike — but with 27.5-inch wheels. [($5,499; ghost-bikes.com]
