Surly Karate Monkey 27.5+

Surly’s been making some of the country’s best and most affordable steel bikes and framesets since 1998. Its Karate Monkey was one of the bikes responsible for bringing 29ers to the masses. Now it’s experimenting again with the new 27.5+ Karate Monkey, the latest incarnation of its venerable 29er. Aside from the ability to mount 27.5+ tires, changes include geometry that’s been updated to be more trail-oriented, internal cable routing for a dropper seatpost, and horizontal rear dropouts that are compatible with just about any kind of quick release or thru-axle hubs you can think of. The 44mm head tube offers compatibility with a wide range of suspension forks, and the Karate Monkey’s steel tubeset is internally coated for an extra layer of protection. The best part? You can get a complete bike for only $1,399. (But our favorite is this $1,199 purple single-speed.) [From $1,399; surlybikes.com]
