Roost Smart Water and Freeze Detector

This unassuming sensor is the least flashy of our CES picks, but a perfect example of smart-home gear becoming completely indispensable. The Roost Swart Water and Freeze Detector does what it says, using a trio of sensors (humidity, temperature, and water) to watch out for leaks, frozen pipes, and other water-based crises. The low-profile detector can fit behind toilets or under fridges, and it connects to WiFi to send alerts to your phone, including when its standard AAA batteries need changing — roughly once every three years, according to Roost. The app is customizable, letting you share alerts with friends or family, set the specific humidity or temperature levels that trigger those alerts, and track environmental changes over long periods. The detector doesn't require a larger network of Roost devices to function (something that sinks similar leak/freeze sensors), and is exactly the kind of dead-simple and potentially disaster-averting smart-home gadget of which we hope to see more. [Available for pre-order, $49; getroost.com]
