Toyota Concept-i

Toyota's vision of the autonomous car, circa 2030, is a uniquely Japanese affair, reimagining the automobile as your buddy, and artificial intelligence as a vaguely spiritual presence. The car communicates with you via a circular avatar that zips around the sleek interior, expressing itself with a glowing outer ring and a pulsing center. The AI constantly collects and crunches data, gauging your mood based on biometric sensors, and determining whether you're in the right state of mind to drive, or should relax and let full autonomy kick in. So why is this out-there concept on our Best of CES List? Toyota is thinking about human-computer interaction in a way that other automakers haven't, and trying to solve big-picture problems — like how a robot car should “talk” to its occupants, and how autonomy and old-fashioned human driving can co-exist. Even if this concept never sees the light of day (it won't), it is staring down some of the most important questions in user interface today. []
