Ultimate Ears Megablast

“Alexa, who makes the best portable speaker that lets me talk to you?” That would be Ultimate Ears, which just launched two Amazon Alexa-enabled versions of its popular barrel-shaped speakers. This week, we pushed aside an Echo Dot and Google Home Mini in our kitchen to test the larger Megablast ($300), which is reported to be 40% louder than the existing Megaboom. About the size of a bottle of wine, it offers rich sound with an appreciably deep bottom end, thanks to larger drivers and two added tweeters. Pair it with the Power Up ($40), a charging dock that lets you quickly grab the speaker and go. Away from the dock, the battery will keep the tunes playing for 16 hours. For now, it can only play music from Amazon, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn—fewer services than Echo devices—but UE has said it plans to add more partners soon. A smaller version, the Blast, features the same hands-free controls. (, $230)
