Nest Protect

The greatest thing to happen to one of the most poorly-engineered devices in all of consumer electronics, the Nest Protect is the first-ever head-turning smoke-and-carbon-monoxide alarm. Case in point: It actually knows the difference, generally speaking, between the minimal amount of smoke produced by regular cooking and an amount that indicates a genuine fire. The Protect also eradicates the late-night low-battery beep — a common design feature that results in far too many disabled, and never re-enabled alarms — by instead issuing a series of non-audible warnings (color cues, app notifications, etc.) before eventually resorting to scary noises. This is industrial design that can save lives, and what smoke/CO2 alarms always should have striven to be. $119, nest.com
